Taking a closer look at the modern dental surgery

More about the state-of-the-art equipment used at Arthur House Dental Care in Sutton Coldfield.

If you could go back in time and walk into a dental practice, say fifty years ago, you would notice a significant difference to those of today; with modern dental practices presenting a much more welcoming and better equipped environment.

Whilst our patients from Sutton Coldfield and the Birmingham area appreciate the warm decor of our waiting room and surgery, their main concern is that we are equipped with modern dental equipment and, of course, the skill of our staff. With this in mind, this blog takes a closer look at some of the equipment we use every day at our local dental practice.

The dental chair

These have been around for years of course, but modern dental chairs are not only designed to provide the patient with a better level of comfort, and hopefully help them relax, but also to be easily manipulated to allow the dentist the best access to the patient’s mouth.

This enables even complex dental procedures such as the placing of dental implants, to be carried out more efficiently and safely and with ergonomics in mind.

X-rays and scanning equipment

Modern x-rays operate using a lower level of radiation than used to be the case. This means that any risk associated with radiation is much lower. X-rays are used to check for any underlying problems that may be occurring at within the tooth and at the root level which cannot be seen otherwise.

Scanning equipment is most often used for advanced cosmetic dental procedures such as placing dental implants and evaluating adult orthodontics.

Sterilisation equipment

Although this is more of a ‘behind the scenes’ piece of equipment at Arthur House Dental Care, it is, none the less, extremely important. Patient safety is a key concern for us and assuring that all dental equipment is fully sterilised plays a major part in the prevention of cross infection.

Our practice too is regularly and professionally cleaned to ensure the highest possible standard of cleanliness and hygiene.

Handpieces

This is the generic term for the likes of dental drills and burrs which are used in a number of treatments e.g. fillings and the preparation of dental veneers.

These operate at high speeds for maximum efficiency and are much more precise and refined than was the case in years gone by. This new efficiency means that procedures can be carried out quickly and with minimal discomfort.

CEREC

We couldn’t let this blog post pass without mentioning Cerec. This is not found in many dental practices and we are proud and delighted to be able to offer it to our patients.

It is an in house piece of equipment which produces dental restorations such as crowns and veneers whilst the patient waits, negating the need for a return visit to have the crown or veneers fitted.
