Dental Veneers – The Next Step to Whiter Teeth

Veneers, a solution for broken and badly stained teeth

At some point in their lives, a lot of people look at their reflection in the mirror and notice just how discoloured their teeth have become. This usually happens as we get older although it can be much earlier in some people such as those who smoke. The first reaction is usually to go out and buy a tooth whitening toothpaste only to find that its effect is actually quite negligible.

This can be disappointing but is understandable given the small amount of the whitening ingredient which is allowed in this type of toothpaste. The next step then is either to try a tooth whitening kit that can be used at home or, as most people do, opt for a tooth whitening experience, one of the most popular procedures at our Sutton Coldfield dental practice.

Whilst most people find that gives excellent results, for others, it may not be as effective as they had hoped. This is largely people who are heavy smokers or perhaps red wine drinkers whose teeth are very badly stained. This disappointment though can be overcome by taking the next step to improve the whiteness of of a persons teeth, and this next step is to have dental veneers fitted.

Perhaps a lot of people in Sutton Coldfield may not have heard of dental veneers, but they are perhaps more common than many people think. As well as improving the colour of teeth though, dental veneers can also be used to correct small imperfections such as cracked or chipped teeth and also for closing the gap between teeth in some cases.

So what are dental veneers? To put it into layman terms, dental veneers are very fine layers of ceramic which are placed onto the surface of the teeth (usually the front ones) in a very similar manner to the way a person would have false fingernails fitted.

Prior to this though, an equivalent thickness of the front of the discoloured tooth needs to be removed in order to keep the thickness of the tooth looking natural and feeling comfortable. Once the tooth has been prepared the veneer is fitted using dental cement. The veneer will then be trimmed and polished to give a natural look and make your teeth look whiter and more attractive.
